The castles of Scotland were basically fortifications of wealthy controlling local monarch's, built of stone to repel invasion from forces bent on conquest. Unlike palaces, which were built for enjoyment, Scotland's castles were built by wealthy families for strength and protection. Some of these castles have fallen to gravitational forces after abandonment. Some were destroyed during the Jacobite wars. some are still intact. and all are open to tourism which helps maintain them.
